Bizerte: Tunisia’s northern port, an hour from Tunis airport
The old harbour, the kasbah and beaches that face north — Bizerte rewards travellers who skip the resort coast. Here is how to reach it.
Bizerte is the northernmost city in Africa, and it feels different from the resort coast: a working fishing harbour ringed by cafés, a kasbah you can wander without a ticket, and long Mediterranean beaches at Corniche and Ras Angela.
Getting there
The gateway is Tunis–Carthage airport, roughly an hour away by motorway. There is no meaningful public-transport link with luggage — a pre-booked private transfer takes you from the arrivals hall to your hotel on the Corniche in one fixed-price ride.
The old port at sunset, with the fishing boats coming in, is worth the whole trip north.
What to do with two days
Day one: the old port, the kasbah walls and grilled fish where the boats land. Day two: Ras Angela — the continent’s northern tip — or the lakeside birdlife of Ichkeul National Park, a UNESCO site twenty minutes inland.
